State and federal ministers on Kimberley fact-finding trip

The Japanese company Inpex has proposed an LNG processing plant on the Maret Islands, but the WA government has indicated it would prefer a shared hub for gas processing.

State and Federal ministers will meet traditional land owners today to discuss a suitable location for a proposed gas processing hub in the Kimberley.

The Federal Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett, and WA’s State Development Minister Eric Ripper will meet the Kimberley Land Council and other stakeholders.

The new hub would process LNG for companies tapping gas in the Browse Basin and has been backed by the WA government as more desirable than multiple sites.

Mr Ripper says the project will need the backing of local indigenous people before it can go ahead.

"The Kimberley Land Council are extremely important stake holders in this whole process," he said.

"We will not develop LNG in the West Kimberley unless we have the informed consent and the substantial economic participation of traditional owners."
