Council pushing to normalise town camps

admin

The Alice Springs Town Council is planning to push for the normalisation of Aboriginal town camps to be put back on the agenda at all levels of government.

The deputy mayor David Koch says there’s been little progress since Tangentyere Council rejected a $60 million offer from the former Howard Government in exchange for 99 year leases.

He hopes the new Federal Government will be willing to re-start negotiations with the town camps and commit the funds needed for them to become regular suburbs.

"I believe the town camps should be normalised but, unfortunately, the town camps don’t comply with the road regulations, power, water, sewerage, all that sort of stuff and that work has to be done before they can be normalised."

Tangentyere Council says it’s re-submitted a proposal for a 20 year lease to the Government and has asked for a meeting with the Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin.
