COAG funding addresses Indigenous issues: Henderson

Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson says the Commonwealth’s additional funding package for states and territories shows a commitment to addressing Indigenous disadvantage.

The Federal Government has unveiled a $15 billion package at a Council of Australian Government (COAG) meeting in Canberra.

Aboriginal group welcomes men’s health policy

An Indigenous health services group says it welcomes the development of a national men’s health policy, but the policy must be backed by support and resources.

This week the Federal Government appointed men’s health ambassadors and released materials for its community consultation slated for early next year.

Legal system creating new stolen generation: ALS

  The West Australian Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) has labelled the handling of juveniles in the state’s justice system as another stolen generation.

The ALS says up to 80% of juveniles held in detention in Western Australia are Aboriginal.

Govt offers further funding for Indigenous environmental projects

The Federal Government says it is offering more opportunities for Aboriginal groups to get funding for environmental projects.

It has announced more targets for its $2 billion Caring for Our Country Program, including employing 300 more Indigenous rangers.

NT Aboriginal health clinic wins right to protect records

A second remote Northern Territory Aboriginal health group has won the right to stop the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) from accessing its records.

In May this year, the ACC ordered the clinic to hand over the medical records of any child associated with sexually transmitted illnesses, pregnancies, or sexual and physical abuse

Govt won’t push through intervention changes in ‘08

 The Federal Government has indicated it is not likely to try to push changes to the Northern Territory intervention through Federal Parliament next week.

The Government wants to reinstate the permit system for Indigenous communities and relax a ban on pornographic pay television programs.

NSW passes new IVF adoption laws

People undergoing IVF treatment in New South Wales will no longer be barred from applying to adopt a child, under new laws passed by State Parliament.

The legislation also means foster carers will be able to keep their allowance if they proceed to adoption and children will have better access to records.

Indigenous council to challenge canteen snub

A Cape York Aboriginal council in far north Queensland says it is outraged by a Supreme Court ruling that has shut down the community’s only canteen.

The State Government passed legislation to stop Indigenous councils from running canteens by the end of the year.

Nearly a month ago, the Aurukun and Kowanyama councils challenged the move in the Supreme Court in Cairns, but it was knocked back by justice Stanley Jones yesterday.

Kowanyama Mayor Thomas Hudson says the council will appeal against the decision.

"I’m very sad as a leader of this community to see that happen and coming up to Christmas where everybody else takes advantage of the festive season, especially around New Year’s to bring the new year in - around the world celebrates, why does Kowanyama have to suffer?" he said.

Councillor Hudson says he is deeply worried there will be an increase of alcohol-fuelled violence.

"I was told by some of my employees that up that street there was young people drinking and carrying on - these were underage," he said.

"That just goes to show that they’re out of control now and now that they know there is no licence to the canteen … they’re just going to go out and get drunk, it’s as simple as that because it’s showing right now as I speak."

 The Federal Government’s plan to restrict public access to Northern Territory Aboriginal communities has been killed in the Senate.

The Federal Government wants to reinstate the controversial permit system for Indigenous communities and relax the ban on pornographic pay television programs.

Indigenous claim on Bay of Fires

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre wants ownership of a coastal tourism hot spot to be transferred to Aboriginal people.

The Bay of Fires on the State’s East Coast was recently listed by an international tourism guide as the world’s top area to visit.
