Increasing Indigenous life expectancy ‘good for economy’

Ric Simes says his firm Access Economics has found all Australians would benefit from measures to improve life expectancy and employment rates for Indigenous people.

He says the savings would come from a more effective workforce and less expenditure on public health.

Director gets nod for Indigenous doco

A film that documents a male initiation ceremony in a remote Aboriginal community has won a major Australian directorial accolade.

Tom Murray, director of In My Father’s Country, has been awarded the prize for best direction of a documentary feature at the Australian Directors Guild Awards.

Report on NT intervention delayed

The report on the official review of the Northern Territory Emergency Response has been delayed until mid-October.

The Emergency Response Review Board was due to report back to the Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister tomorrow.

Darwin traditional owners clash over Inpex development

The Larrakia Nation says the Inpex plant, planned for Blaydin Point on Darwin Harbour, is incompatible with its environmental standards. 

Last week’s announcement on the Inpex development has sparked a war of words between the two groups representing interests of Darwin’s traditional owners.

On Friday, the Japanese energy company announced plans to build a $12 billion gas plant at Blaydin Point on Darwin Harbour.

Katherine Mayor calls for booze ban reprieve

 This week a report card on the emergency response in the Northern Territory is expected to be handed to the Federal Government by its hand-picked review panel.

But in the town of Katherine, 300 kilometres south of Darwin, the unofficial assessment is already in.

Tenders called for $1.5m diabetes research centre

A research organisation working to reduce heart disease and diabetes in the Indigenous population hopes its new centre in Alice Springs will be up and running by the middle of next year.

The Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute is already in the town and is calling for tenders for a $1.5 million building on the Alice Springs Hospital campus.

Uniting Church forum to address NT intervention concerns

About 200 people are expected to attend a Uniting Church forum at Darwin University this week to voice their concerns about the Federal Government’s intervention in remote communities.

The forum is being held on Tuesday, the same day the Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin is expected to be given the results of a review into the intervention.

Man arrested for APY Lands child rape

South Australian police have made their first arrest since specialist officers were placed in the remote Aboriginal lands in the far north-west.

A 19-year-old man is expected to face court soon for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands earlier this month.

Suicide exposes crisis for indigenous children

 THE suicide of a 12-year-old boy in Kowanyama has exposed the child safety crisis in remote indigenous communities in Queensland.

The case has prompted authorities to admit that 40 per cent of notifications are not dealt with and staff on the ground are inexperienced, under-resourced and unable to cope with the misery played out daily in Cape York communities.

Calls to alter NT emergency intervention plan

 THE federal Government is under pressure to modify the central plank of the emergency intervention into remote Aboriginal communities, with the chair of its review board leaning towards the abolition of compulsory income management.

The Australian understands the hand-picked emergency response review board chair, Peter Yu, who is finalising a report tothe Government on the invention’s future, is in favour ofamodified and voluntary form of income management for 73 remote Northern Territory communities.
