Pearson says Indigenous better off under Bligh Government

Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson has criticised the pursuit of Indigenous issues by the former Queensland government.

He addressed media and business leaders at the Queensland Media Club today and said the current State Government had made more progress than three-and-a-half terms of the Beattie government.

Govt urged to act on Indigenous youth detention rate

The National Children’s and Youth Law Centre says the Federal Government must address the high detention rate for young Indigenous people.

A report by the Institute of Health and Welfare shows the number of children in juvenile detention has risen to a four-year high.

Indigenous lobby group rejects prisons plan

An Aboriginal lobby group based in Fitzroy Crossing says the Liberal Party should be looking at ways to reduce the Indigenous incarceration rate rather than pledging to build new prisons.

Almost 1,600 Aboriginal adults are currently imprisoned in Western Australia.

US museum urged to return Indigenous remains

Traditional owners from a remote Arnhem Land community in the Northern Territory want one of the largest and most respected museums in the world to return their ancestors’ remains.

In what has been called a case of modern day head-hunting, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington has recently handed back some bones, but kept a collection of skulls.

Uranium explorer to meet traditional owners

The mining company looking for uranium at Napperby Station, north-west of Alice Springs, says it is meeting traditional owners today.

Toro Energy’s managing director, Greg Hall, says there is a consistent strip of uranium just eight metres from the surface.

Far north forums spotlight Indigenous education

Cape York residents are being urged to attend public forums about Indigenous education in the region today.

A body that advises the Queensland Government on policy making is holding talks in Weipa, Aurukun, Mapoon and Napranum.

Juvenile justice supervision figure hits 4yr high

An Institute of Health and Welfare report has found that the number of young Australians being detained under juvenile justice supervision has reached a four-year-high.

Almost 6,000 young people are now under juvenile justice supervision in Australia each day.

Staff shortages hampering fight against petrol sniffing: review

The Federal Government’s review of its petrol sniffing strategy has found it is poorly staffed and at times hamstrung by the Northern Territory intervention.

The report has only come to light because it has been tabled as part of the Government’s response to a Senate inquiry.

Tribunal seeks Gippsland land claim submissions

 The National Native Title Tribunal is taking submissions from people affected by a land claim over Gippsland and Wilsons Promontory.

The Gunai Kurnai people launched a claim in 1997, but another group calling themselves the Kurnai have launched a separate claim for the same areas.

ABC takes legal action to overturn Mulrunji suppression order

The ABC is taking action in Queensland’s Supreme Court in a bid to overturn a three-year-old court order suppressing controversial evidence in the case of an Aboriginal death in custody on Palm Island.

The non-publication order was made in 2005 by Deputy State Coroner Christine Clements.
