Elder casts doubt over Koori school assurances

An Indigenous community leader in north-west Victoria is sceptical about assurances from the Premier that the region’s Koori schools will not be forced to close.

The schools and Koori education generally are being reviewed because the Education Department says students are not meeting standards.

KLC urges Rudd to address Indigenous education

The Kimberley Land Council (KLC) is calling on prime minister-elect Kevin Rudd to make Indigenous education a priority for his government.

The KLC was responding to statements by Mr Rudd that he will say "sorry" to Indigenous Australians.

Bishop tight-lipped on ’sorry’ stance

The federal Coalition looks increasingly unlikely to support the new Government’s pledge to say sorry to Indigenous Australians, despite some in the Liberal Party publicly backing the move.

Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd has promised a formal apology to the Stolen Generations.

The impact of the intervention on NT Indigenous radio

The new chair of the Australian Indigenous Communications Association, Jim Remedio, warns that the NT intervention is undermining Indigenous broadcasting, …..writes ELLIE RENNIE

THE appointment of managers over community councils in remote communities is in direct conflict with the licence conditions which Indigenous community licensees must adhere to, according to Jim Remedio, the new chair of the Australian Indigenous Communications Association (AICA).

Under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, community broadcasting licensees must “continue to represent the community interest that it represented at the time when the licence was allocated” and encourage members of the community to participate in the running of the station.

GP group hopeful of finding doctor for Pintubi

General Practice and Primary Health Care NT says it hopes the Indigenous intervention will result in more doctors and nurses willing to work in the Territory.

The group’s Jim Thurley says he’s spoken to several doctors and nurses involved in the intervention who’ve expressed interest in returning.

Education union pushes new governments on Indigenous education

The Northern Territory branch of the Australian Education Union wants the Member for Arnhem Malarndirri McCarthy to be included in Territory Labor’s new cabinet.

Chief Minister PAul Henderson is expected to announce the new ministerial posts tomorrow, after promoting backbenchers Matthew Bonson and Len Kiely earlier this week.

Union president Nadine Williams says she hopes Ms McCarthy is chosen to tackle what she has described as the neglected education portfolio.

Snowdon calls for health service staffing

The Labor Member for the Northern Territory seat of Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, says he is not surprised an Aboriginal medical service in the western desert is having trouble attracting staff.

The Pintubi Homelands Health Service in the community of Kintore says it might have to close its doors over the Christmas period because only one nurse is available to work.

Indigenous clinic head criticises partners’ lack of support

The head of the Aboriginal Medical Centre in Armidale claims its partner groups have deserted it during its management crisis.

The centre has lost some of its Commonwealth funding because of management issues but its operations manager, Elva Taylor, says it is still operating and still ‘in the black’.

Stolen baby found safe and well

Police have located a woman, and the baby she allegedly stole from a Perth hospital, safe and well at Northam, east of Perth.

Police say the woman was found on a bus.

The baby’s mother had been in a maternity ward at Subiaco’s King Edward Memorial Hospital early yesterday evening when she was approached by a woman who asked to take a photo of her newborn child.

Opposition, independents back changes to child protection laws

The Northern Territory Parliament this afternoon passed the most significant changes to child protection laws in more than 20 years.

The Opposition and the independents have unanimously backed the NT Government’s Bill.
